Peru

Inca round trip

If you visited Peru only once in your life, what should you absolutely see? Our Country Discovery itineraries are designed just for that. In our past trips with you we learned the tourist traps to avoid and the less-known gems that make the trip much more authentic. Let us take you through the vast nature and rich history of Peru in this 12 day itinerary.

Day 1

Arrival in Lima

Our Peruvian adventure begins in Lima, its bustling capital with a rich history. After settling into our hotel, we'll have the chance to explore the vibrant Miraflores district by night. We enjoy our first Pacific sunset with our newly met travel companions and indulge in Peru's cuisine with a welcome dinner featuring the freshest ceviche and pisco sours.

Day 2

Paracas and Huacachina

Exploration

Our first day starts early, as we leave Lima and drive south to Paracas, a beautiful coastal town on the Pacific ocean. We embark on a scenic boat trip to the Ballestas Islands, often referred to as the 'Poor Man’s Galapagos.' Here, you'll see an amazing variety of marine wildlife and some unique drawings in the desert dunes, the Paracas Candelabra.

In the afternoon we head to Huacachina, a stunning desert oasis and one of the less known highlights of the trip. Here, we can let our adrenaline rush free in the desert, jumping from a sandboarding ride to drifting on dune buggies. Getting tired today is not the worst idea: a 12 hour night-bus ride to Arequipa awaits us. Fear not, night-busses in Peru are as comfortable as hotels, giving us a full night of sleep after all the activities of the day.

Day 3

Arequipa

Exploration

Today is all about exploring Arequipa, the 'White City,' known for its stunning colonial architecture made from sillar, a white volcanic stone. We spend the day exploring Santa Catalina Monastery, enjoying the local markets, and viewing Misti Volcano from one of the city's many rooftop cafes. Arequipa's blend of indigenous and Spanish culture provides a unique insight into the diverse fabric of Peruvian society.

Day 4

Chivay

Exploration

An early start takes us on a scenic drive to Chivay, the gateway to the Colca Canyon. En route, we'll stop at Patapampa, a viewpoint offering sights of volcanic mountains. In Chivay, you can soak in thermal baths, surrounded by the Andes, and later enjoy a traditional Andean dinner accompanied by local folk music. It's a day to relax and immerse yourself in Peru's natural beauty.

Day 5

Lake Titicaca

Exploration

Today brings us to Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. We'll visit the Uros Floating Islands, man-made islands constructed from reeds by the Uros people. In the afternoon, we'll travel to Taquile Island, known for its breathtaking panoramas and textile art, a UNESCO heritage. The day ends with a homestay on Amantani Island, where you'll experience the warmth and hospitality of the local Quechua-speaking families.

Day 6

Exploring the lake

Exploration

After a traditional breakfast with your host family, we'll explore Amantani Island's cultural sites, including its two peak temples, Pachamama and Pachatata. We return to Puno in the afternoon, where you can unwind along the lake's shore or explore the city's rich culture and history at your own pace.

Day 7

Rainbow Mountains

Exploration

An early departure takes us on a drive through the South Valley to the trailhead for the Rainbow Mountain trek, a stunning display of natural mineral formations in the Andes. It's a challenging hike, but reaching the viewpoint over the striped mountains at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. We'll spend the evening in Cusco, the former capital of the Incan Empire.

Day 8

Cusco

Exploration

A day dedicated to discovering Cusco's rich history, from the grandeur of the Plaza de Armas to the sacred Qorikancha temple. Wander the cobblestone streets, visit artisan markets, and taste local delicacies. As night falls, Cusco's vibrant nightlife comes alive, offering everything from quiet cafés to lively bars and clubs.

Day 9

Sacred Valley

Exploration

Venture into the Sacred Valley, a region filled with ancient ruins, agricultural terraces, and traditional villages. Highlights include the market at Pisac and the fortress of Ollantaytambo. This valley was the heart of the Incan Empire, and its deep cultural significance and stunning landscapes make it a must-visit. We'll end the day by catching the train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.

Day 10

Finally Machu Picchu!

Exploration

Rise early for the bus to Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. You'll have a guided tour of the site, learning about its history, architecture, and the mysteries that still shroud this ancient wonder. There's time to explore on your own, perhaps climbing Huayna Picchu for a bird's eye view. In the late afternoon, we return to Cusco, carrying memories of a lifetime.

Day 11

Back to Lima

We catch an early-morning flight back to Lima, where we have the day to explore the rich tapestry of modern and historical culture this city offers. We start with a guided tour of the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, including the grand Plaza Mayor, the imposing Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace. In the afternoon we stroll and soak in the bohemian vibes of the Barranco district, known for its street art, galleries, and cafes. Tonight we won't miss the chance to try some of Lima's renowned gastronomy in a world-class Michelin restaurant.

Day 12

Goodbye, Peru!

Our Peruvian adventure comes to an end today. After breakfast, you'll have some free time to relax, take a final stroll in Miraflores along the Malecón, or do some last-minute shopping for souvenirs to take home.
