Trail Running Paradise

Every day is a perfect blend of trail running and island exploration. We'll conquer diverse terrains, from the coastal paths of Ponta de São Lourenço to the challenging peaks of Pico Ruivo. Between runs, we'll dive into Madeira's culture, visiting the vibrant capital Funchal, relaxing in natural pools, and embarking on a whale watching adventure. Our journey takes us through misty forests, along dramatic cliffs, and to breathtaking viewpoints that showcase the island's stunning beauty.

Day 1

Welcome to Madeira

Your Madeiran adventure begins as you arrive on this enchanting island. After checking into our comfortable hotel, we'll head to Funchal to pick up our rental cars, providing us with the freedom to explore the island at our own pace throughout the week.

Depending on your arrival time, you might have some time to explore the capital city of Funchal. Wander through its historic streets, admire the colorful street art in the Old Town, and experience the vibrant atmosphere of the Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers' Market). We'll conclude our first day with a welcome dinner, where you'll meet your fellow trail runners and get excited about the week ahead.

Day 2

Coastal Trails and Ocean Giants

Start your Madeira trail running experience with the scenic Ponta de São Lourenço route. This trail offers stunning coastal views and takes you to the easternmost point of Madeira.

After a refreshing shower and lunch, we'll embark on an exciting whale watching tour. Set sail into the Atlantic Ocean for a chance to spot magnificent marine life, including various species of whales and playful dolphins in their natural habitat. As the sun begins to set, we'll return to shore, filled with awe at the day's adventures.

Day 3

Mountain Challenge and Natural Pools

Today we tackle our most challenging trail: the route from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo. This exhilarating run takes you between Madeira's highest peaks, offering breathtaking views of the island's rugged interior.

After conquering the peaks, we'll soothe our muscles in the natural pools of Doca do Cavacas. These volcanic rock pools offer a unique opportunity to relax and rejuvenate while enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the Atlantic waters. As you float in the crystal-clear water, take in the stunning coastal views and reflect on your mountain-top achievement.

Day 4

Canyoning Adventure and Coastal Charm

Give your legs a rest as we embark on an exhilarating canyoning experience. Navigate through Madeira's rugged gorges, rappel down waterfalls, and leap into crystal-clear pools. This thrilling activity offers a unique perspective of the island's lush landscapes and hidden water features.

In the afternoon, we'll explore the picturesque town of Machico, Madeira's second-largest city. Stroll along its golden sandy beach, visit the 15th-century Capela do Senhor dos Milagres, and wander through its charming streets. We'll cap off the day by watching a stunning sunset from the Miradouro Francisco Alvares de Nobrega viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the eastern coastline.

Day 5

Misty Forests and Coastal Pools

We'll start the day with a visit to the dramatic Veu da Noiva waterfall, where water cascades 30 meters down a cliff face into the ocean. Then, we'll head to our trail run in Fanal, a mystical forest known for its ancient laurel trees and often shrouded in mist.

After our run through the enchanted forest, we'll cool off in the famous natural swimming pools of Porto Moniz. These volcanic rock pools offer a unique swimming experience with the Atlantic Ocean waves crashing nearby. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon relaxing in these natural jacuzzis, surrounded by the rugged beauty of Madeira's northern coast.

Day 6

Coastal Cliffs and Sunset Views

Today's run takes us along the Lombada da Ponta Do Sol trail, offering stunning coastal views and a mix of terrains.

  • Difficulty: Medium


After lunch, we'll visit the vertigo-inducing Cabo Girão Skywalk, Europe's highest cliff skywalk, offering breathtaking views from its glass platform 580 meters above the ocean. Next, we'll stop at the unique Cascata dos Anjos waterfall, where water cascades over the coastal road. We'll end the day watching the sunset at Ponta do Pargo lighthouse, perched on the westernmost cliff of Madeira, providing a perfect vantage point for a spectacular end to our day.

Day 7

Levada Walks and Garden Paradise

Our final trail takes us to the famous 25 Fontes (25 Springs), a beautiful levada walk through the lush landscapes of Madeira.

In the afternoon, we'll explore the stunning Monte Palace Tropical Garden, a verdant paradise showcasing exotic plants from around the world. Don't miss the chance to experience the traditional Monte Sledge ride, a unique toboggan run down the steep streets of Monte. We'll conclude our adventure with a farewell dinner, celebrating our week of trail running and exploration in this Atlantic paradise.

Day 8

Farewell to Madeira

After a final breakfast at our hotel, it's time to bid farewell to Madeira. As you prepare for departure, take a moment to reflect on the week's adventures - from challenging trail runs and breathtaking viewpoints to cultural experiences and natural wonders. You'll leave with memories of exhilarating trails, stunning landscapes, and new friendships forged in this island paradise.

Depending on your flight time, you might have a few hours for last-minute souvenir shopping in Funchal or a final stroll along the promenade.
